Exploring the Benefits of Temperament Therapy

Updated: Nov 8, 2021

At Pathfinders Pastoral Care Ministries, we partner and walk with you through the season of life you are currently struggling with – marriage issues, anxiety, loss. Our Christian counseling model is designed to help you understand yourself based on your unique temperament profile.

Understanding Temperament Therapy is the first step to discovering the benefits it could offer you or someone you love.

What is Temperament Therapy?

Our temperament is who we are on the inside. Temperament is the God-given, inborn nature of each person, determining how they interact and react to people, circumstances, situations, and the world.

Temperament Therapy was developed over several years of research by the National Christian Counselors Association (N.C.C.A.) as part of a healing process based on Scripture. On their website, N.C.C.A. shares, “Discovering the nature of a person's foundation, their temperament, provides … an understanding of how that person was designed and created by God.”

“Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith.” - Romans 12:6

How Does Temperament Therapy Work?

Originally called the Temperament Analysis Profile, its name was changed in 2000 to the Arno Profile System or A.P.S. in honor of its developers, Drs. Richard and Phyllis Arno.

The A.P.S. Response Form is a questionnaire that takes roughly 10 minutes to complete. An individual’s responses are analyzed, and an A.P.S. Profile System report is created. This A.P.S. report reveals your "spiritual genetics" or your individual temperament - who God made you to be. Research has shown this report to have a 95.7% accuracy rate

Why Does Temperament Therapy Work?

The questionnaire measures your needs, natural traits, strengths, and weaknesses according to your God-given temperament. As Christian counselors, this gives us the tools to offer knowledge and steps to help you overcome your challenges. Having a deeper understanding of why we do the things we do or respond the way we do can help individuals:

· Learn what causes relationship conflicts and how to resolve them

· Discover how to meet your temperament needs in a healthy way

· Understand your temperament strengths and how they empower you

Having a deeper understanding of temperament can help couples:

· Learn the temperament of their partner/spouse

· Uncover effective techniques for communication between different temperaments

There is no right or wrong temperament. All temperaments come from God - each with strengths and weaknesses. When you discover what temperament you were born with, you can keep it in balance by meeting your individual temperament needs. When your needs are not being met in a Godly way, you can experience feelings of anxiety, stress, anger, loneliness, or depression.

Understanding your temperament can help you create healthier habits and resolve conflicts you may be having with your spouse, friends, or others.
